What Makes The Best Bloody Mary Mix?

best bloody mary mix

(Updated for 2018)

Think of the best bloody mary you’ve ever had. We're assuming it was a bar and over brunch.

As most people know...a good bloody mary is an extraordinary sensory experience for your taste buds, and a righteously good way to start your day.

Most people have their favorite mix, but these are often just the popular options, not the best.

For our evaluation, we will use a versatile group of mixes.

  • Mr and Mr T's
  • Zing Zang
  • McClure
  • Stu's Bloody Mary Concentrate

Ok we got our list of candidates, but when we talk about THE best bloody mary mix, what's the criteria?

For us, an amazing bloody mary mix must meet or exceed in the following standards:

  • Delicious Flavor
  • Consistent
  • Balance or Ratio
  • Versatile
  • Real Ingredients (no artificial crap)

If it doesn't meet each and every one of these areas, it might be a really good mix, but can it really be the best? That's a rhetorical question...it can't.

Let's investigate, shall we?

1. Delicious

A bloody mary can be considered a pretty simple drink. It consists of:

  • Vodka (traditionally but you can add other liquor)
  • Tomato Juice
  • Spices (or the mix)
  • Usually lemon juice
  • Celery stalk and lemon wedge garnish (although garnishes can get crazy)

We at Stus, created a Mix, one that allows you to have a perfect bloody mary. Every. Time.

There are two types of best bloody mary mixes in this world: those that include the tomato juice and those that don’t.

Bloody Mary Mixes WITH Tomato Juice:

While those that include tomato juice are great if you want the quick and dirty bloody mary, you cheat yourself on the tasty, decadent details.

When you combine the concentrate with tomato juice long before consumption, you run the risk of stealing punch from both.

Keep the two separate so you can taste each more clearly in the final product.

Combining them ahead of time, while still good, homogenizes the separate flavors into one confusing experience.

The product also expires faster. A bloody mary mix, like Stu's can last up to 6 months after you open it

Bloody Mary Mixes WITHOUT Tomato Juice:

We created a bloody mary mix WITHOUT tomato juice for one simple reason...options.
  • Do you like your bloody mary with Clamato juice?
  • Do you prefer your bloody marys with way more ‘tomato-ey’ flavor?
  • Or maybe you prefer yours with organic right off the vine-ripe tomato juice.

So that's the same cocktail with 3 VERY different flavors. So that's why we excluded tomato juice.
We aren't in the business of telling people how to make their bloody mary. We just want to be there to guide you down the path to be able to create the perfect bloody mary.
Speaking of tomato juice? Which one is the best?

Best Tomato Juice for a Bloody Mary

Tough question, but we'll answer it. The best tomato juice for a Bloody Mary is the one that you like best.

My personal favorite is to create our own. It's easier than it sounds.

Here's a recipe for a Semi-Homemade Tomato Juice

For The Perfect Bloody Mary - The Ratio Is Key

perfect bloody mary

Taste is paramount, but that doesn’t mean texture can be allowed to fall by the wayside.

There is a science to these things--a good bloody mary must be at the perfect consistency. Too thin and you are drinking flavored water, too thick and you’re downing tomato paste.

For the sake of conversation, let’s use Stu’s This Is Bloody Mary Mix as an example.

Always remember: the golden ratio for the best bloody mary is a simple 2-6-1.

  • 2 oz Stu's This Is Bloody Mary Mix Concentrate

  • 6 oz tomato juice

  • 1 oz vodka

Follow this 2-6-1 ratio and you will never be disappointed.

The Best Green Bloody Mary Mix

A newer trend in bloody marydome: a bloody mary without tomatoes.

It sounds like sacrilege but it’s truly delicious.

Stu’s This Is Bloody Mary Concentrate allows you to execute this by not including tomato in the bloody mary mix.

The Green Bloody Mary is a great example of the tomato-less bloody mary.

Ingredients:

  • 3 celery stalks (plus more for garnish)
  • 1 cucumber (plus more for garnish)
  • 4 tomatillos
  • 1/2 green bell pepper
  • 2-3 jalapeños
  • 1 small yellow onion
  • 3 oz. fresh lime juice
  • 1/2 cup fresh cilantro
  • 6 c. water1.5 oz of Stu's Bloody Mary Mix
  • 1.5 oz. of vodka per drink

Directions:

Remove stems and peels from the cucumber, tomatillos, and peppers.

Coarsely chop all the vegetables and herbs. Purée them all. Separately or together, it doesn't matter.

Combine purée and lime juice into a large container and stir in the water. At this point you can get a feel for what the drink is going to taste like. Though it will probably get hotter.

Add Stu's Bloody Mary Mix.

Let the mixture sit in the refrigerator for an hour.

Serve about 5 oz. of mix with 1.5 oz. of vodka in a glass over ice. Garnish with cucumber and celery. Or however you like.

Key Factors: What Makes A Good Bloody Mary

What Food Goes With A Bloody Mary?

food with a bloody mary

As always, there are no concrete rules--but some things do pair better with the classic bloody mary than others.

Savory Is A Strong Option

Breakfast food is the quintessential pairing when it comes to food with your bloody mary. There is just something about a big plate of huevos rancheros or a hearty omelette that thoroughly compliments a well made bloody mary.

Spicy food is also a top contender. Spicy meats or bacon really play well off the complex savory notes in your bloody mary mix.

Transparent Flavors Are Great Too

More base level flavors make for a great palette cleanser when consumed with a bloody mary. The idea here is that the bloody mary does the talking, and the food pairing plays a supporting role.

Celery, cheese, olives, and carrots are just a few light options that can add a whole new world of texture to the experience.

Tension and release is the name of the game here--your best bloody mary mix of choice works up your taste buds, and the palate cleansing food options washes it away so you can start over with the next sip.

When To Drink A Bloody Mary

We have arrived. Positively the best part of bloody mary culture. It’s perfectly acceptable to drink this delicious beverage before five.

Moreover, one brazen reddit user took to the forum to say that, after 5 p.m., the bloody mary should be referred to only as “bartender’s nightmare” as a ploy to “discourage the ignorant.”

It’s the perfect pairing for breakfast food, or it could include your breakfast food--whatever you want.

The bloody mary is essentially the end all be all drink if you are on a mission to challenge the idea of when in the day it is acceptable to begin consuming alcohol.

Bloody mary o’clock anyone?

The Chicago Tribune makes the case that the rules should not be so hard fast when it comes to enjoying a loosey-goosey drink like a bloody mary.

Drink it any time of day--it’s a free country after all.

What it boils down to is: bartenders don’t want to make you a goddamn bloody mary.

This is because, compared to other beverages, it takes tons of ingredients and too much time.

Here’s where Stu’s comes roaring out of left field with a proposition that could change this unfortunate night life standard.

With Stu’s, you only need three items to make a kickass bloody mary: Stu’s, your spirit of choice and tomato juice. If every bartender had some Stu’s This is Bloody Mary Mix behind the counter, the war on the post 5 p.m. mary would be over.
